Flight: Aug - Nov, then again from March-May after hibernation.
Foodplant:   Blackthorn and Hawthorn.

Widespread.
Distinctive variation in appearance.

A large coarse scale tuft (hence vernacular name) situated towards the end of the discal cell on each forewing is peculiar to this species.
